Day 1 – San Francisco

Arrive in San Francisco, CA.  On arrival, enjoy an afternoon city sightseeing tour to include Chinatown, crossing the Golden Gate Bridge, Twin Peaks, and the Presidio.

Then check into your Fisherman’s Wharf hotel for a three night stay.  Tonight, dinner is included at a local restaurant at Fisherman’s Wharf. (D)

Day 2 – San Francisco – Napa Valley Wine Train

Today, you travel north for a ride on the Napa Valley Wine Train. The highlight of the day is a relaxing three-hour, thirty-six mile round-trip journey from the historic town of Napa, through one of the world’s most well known wine valleys to the quaint village of St. Helena, and back. You will enjoy a freshly prepared lunch in a fully restored 1915-1917 Pullman Dining Car you pass the vineyards and wineries of Napa Valley.

Then you will stop and see the Giant Redwoods at Muir Woods. The trees’ ages range from 400 to 800 years, their height up to 250 feet. Return to San Francisco after your visit.  You will then have a free evening to explore San Francisco on your own. (B,L)

Day 3 -San Francisco – Roaring Camp Railroad – Alcatraz

This morning ride into the past on a 19th Century Steam Train. Travel over trestles, through towering redwood groves and up a winding narrow-gauge grade to the summit of Bear Mountain as conductors narrate the history of Roaring Camp, the railroad and the forest.

Travel back to San Francisco this afternoon and take a Cruise to Alcatraz. The cruise takes you along San Francisco’s waterfront, under the Golden Gate Bridge, along the Marin Headlands, around Alcatraz and back to Fisherman’s Wharf.  Tonight, dinner is included at a local restaurant. (B,D)

Day 4 -Mariposa – Yosemite National Park

This morning travel to Yosemite National Park. Take an afternoon tour of the Park. First protected in 1864, Yosemite National Park is best known for its waterfalls, but within its nearly 1,200 square miles, you can find deep valleys, grand meadows, ancient giant sequoias, a vast wilderness area, and much more.

Continue travel to Mariposa, CA where you check into your hotel for an overnight stay.  Dinner is included tonight at a local restaurant. (B,D)

Day 5 -Sacramento – Sacramento River Train

This morning visit the Marshall Gold Discovery State Historical Park located at the site of the gold discovery that started the 1849 California Gold. The park features a museum, many original and restored buildings, and costumed volunteers. You can learn how to pan for gold, and you can buy a gold pan there as well. Bekeart’s Gun Shop, located in the Park, offers similar activities and old-fashioned trade goods.

Next, visit the Railtown 1897 State Historic Park, home to the Historic Jamestown Shops and Roundhouse—an intact and still-functioning steam locomotive repair and maintenance facility, portions of which date back to 1897. This one-of-a-kind attraction combines industrial heritage and railroad history with the lore of Hollywood’s film industry.

You will also have the opportunity to view movie props and other artifacts used in the production of feature films, TV shows, and commercials. One of the most popular of these is the mock-up of an 1880s railroad caboose used in filming for “Back to the Future III.” Other items of interest include fake “rocks,” background scenery, and numerous small-town station signs.

Tonight, you enjoy dinner on the Sacramento River Train. Enjoy a delicious meal and sunset views of the wide-open countryside. (B,D)

Day 6 – Giant Redwoods

Today you will take a scenic drive along the Redwood Highway passing redwood groves and a rugged wave-carved shoreline of beaches, cliffs, and sea stacks.

Next, you visit the Chandelier Tree, also known as the drive-thru tree. It is a giant redwood located north of San Francisco on US 101. The massive tree had the ignoble fate of having a tunnel carved through its base more than 60 years ago.

Then you will drive the Avenue of the Giants with a local guide. The Avenue of the Giants are the largest remaining stand of old growth redwoods in the world.

Continue travel to Garberville, CA for an overnight stay.  Dinner is included tonight at a local restaurant. (B,D)

Day 7 – Skunk Train – San Francisco

Travel to Fort Bragg this morning for a ride on the Skunk Train. On this excursion, travels along the Pudding Creek estuary immediately out of the city limits. Quietly slipping into Tunnel No. 1, the train emerges into the Noyo River Canyon, the river you will cross for the balance of your journey to Northspur. Traveling at the base of the canyon, you are constantly looking up to see the tops of redwoods.

After your train ride, return to San Francisco where you will be staying at an Airport Hotel for the evening. Dinner is included tonight at a local restaurant. (B,D)

Day 8 -Departure Day

After breakfast, depart for home. (B)
